As a result of ageing and the exposure of our skin to the harmful effects of sun, stress and pollutants, the ability of our skin to generate new cells is slowly reduced. Due to reduced skin cell turnover, old cells are left on the surface for longer, leading to a loss of the skin's natural hydration and elasticity. Skin starts to show unwelcome signs of ageing, becoming rough, uneven and lacking in tone. You may notice an increase in fine lines, wrinkles, freckles and age spots.

How it Works

Nu-derm is a skin restoration system which helps to return skin to a healthy state, free of the disease and deterioration that is accelerated by the skin's exposure to harmful UV rays and pollutants. Skin health restoration is achieved through the topical application of the Nu-derm system of products, which work together to help regulate skin cell functions and improve circulation. The products work at a cellular level, deep within the skin, to achieve real long-lasting results. Skin is restored, looks radiant and younger as fresh new cells are able to reach the surface.

The system improves the functioning of 3 skin cells: Melanocytes, Keratinocytes and Fibroblasts, as well as stimulating new vessel growth to improve circulation to the skin. These actions are achieved by means of the Therapeutic Cascade.

Reduces overactive melanocyte production

Corrects hyper-pigmentation which leads to freckles and age spots, and distributes melanin evenly

Repairs (intracellular transcription) of Keratinocytes

Cells produced by the deep basal layer of skin are more uniform, resulting in improved skin structure and tone

Stimulates fibroblasts

Increases fibroblast production of elastin and collagen, proteins which improve the strength and resilience of skin.

How to Use

Nu-Derm programmes

Below are examples of three systems commonly used, but these systems can also be adapted if required.

Gentle Programme

As part of the gentle system the skin is cleansed and toned morning and night, followed by a 10% Vitamin C serum. The active products (Clear, Exfoderm, Blender and Tretinoin) are used two to three days a week, to minimize redness and flaking. It is recommended to use 0.05% Tretinoin with this system as it is less irritating. The eye creams and décolletage creams can be used everyday with this system. When you purchase products you can contact our skin expert to tailor a programme specifically for your needs.

Standard Programme

This programme can be a little more irritating but will achieve results more quickly. Active products are used every day, and with this system it is recommended to use 0.1% Tretinoin. At any stage products can be reduced if reactions are too intense.

Aggressive Programme

This programme would only be used for thick, oily sun-damaged skin, and is particularly good for male patients .The frequency of Tretinoin 0.1% and blender can be increased to twice a day if this can be tollerated, and Exfoderm Forte would be used. You will experience redness and peeling with this system, and would be advised to speak to our skin expert prior to commencing to discuss potential reactions.

With all of the systems the use of Healthy Skin Protector or Physical Sun Block is recommended as the systems will make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure.

What to Expect

Obagi Nu-Derm - What to Expect

During treatment you can expect to experience four phases as you undergo transformation to a more healthy and younger-looking appearance. The length of time between the phases will vary based upon multiple factors including patient age, skin type, amount of damage and daily compliance.

Out with the Old

The Obagi system penetrates the deepest layer of skin to correct the signs of aging. During treatment you may notice:

• Freckles, age spots and uneven dark patches beginning to fade
• Redness, dryness and flaking of skin
• Acne or wrinkles may look worse temporarily

These are all normal reactions and indicate that the treatment is working. This phase typically lasts for up to 6 weeks during which time you will notice a visible improvement.

In with the New

As stimulation continues, you begin to notice significant improvements in your skin. Normal healthy cells are moving to the skin's surface faster, melanin cells are distributed more easily and collagen and elastin production is increased. You can expect to see:

• Reduction of wrinkles
• Further fading of freckles and dark spots
• Tightening of pores
• Subsidence of redness and flaking

As the skin begins to tolerate the products and the reactions subside, your skin will look and feel much improved.

What is the difference between the Nu-Derm System and products purchased from department stores, drug stores and infomercials, etc?

The products in the Nu-Derm System are clinically proven, prescription-strength, ingredients that work at the cellular level to improve your skin cell function. Products purchased from a retail store are cosmetic-based products that do not contain prescription-strength ingredients.

Can the Nu-Derm System be used if I will be in the sun (i.e. at sporting events or at the beach)?

Keeping in mind that extended sun exposure damages the skin, it is suggested that you avoid prolonged sun exposure without protection. While on the system, you can participate in normal outdoor activity, however, your skin may be sensitive to the sun and heat. It is very important to always wear a sunscreen, like the Healthy Skin Protection SPF 35 and/or the Physical UV Block SPF 32 in the Nu-Derm System, and reapply sun protection every few hours while exposed to the sun.
