Concerns
Chronological or environmental skin aging. Deeper lines and wrinkles around the eyes and forehead, tiny wrinkles around the mouth and lips, hyperpigmentation (age spots, sun damage), thinning skin with reduced elasticity/firmness.
Solution
As we age, skin cells go dormant and cellular generation slows; what used to take 30 days now takes considerably longer. Old, dull, damaged skin cells remain on the surface of the skin. To accelerate cellular turnover, Ossential® Radical Night Repair Plus features a potent concentration of retinol. After it has penetrated our skin, retinol reacts with natural enzymes to convert to trans-retinoic acid, which is a usable form of Vitamin A. Skin can then generate new cells and produce more collagen. This activity makes older cells rise to the surface and exfoliate. As new skin cells emerge, skin appears younger, healthier, more even-toned and radiant.
Candidates
Because of the high concentration of active ingredients, people who have the following conditions are not suitable candidates: • Sensitive skin that is easily irritated • Rosacea • Pregnant or lactating • Concurrent use of prescription acne medication • Daily use of a retinoid
Features & Benefits
- 1.0% concentration of retinol — Ossential® Radical Night Repair Plus features the highest concentration of retinol in an over-the-counter product (6X-10X higher than traditional retinol products). Retinol causes new collagen to be formed in chronologically-aged skin and skin damaged by UV rays. It is the most effective topical anti-aging ingredient, because it assists in the process of repairing and rebuilding collagen. Given the high concentration of retinol, Ossential® Radical Night Repair Plus works faster, and more effectively, than any other anti-aging product.
- Products that have a low concentration of retinol—e.g, .10% to .15%, produce less retinol cascade (the process by which special enzymes convert the retinol to the active metabolite, retinoic acid). When this conversion rate is low, very little retinoic acid becomes bio-available to the cells. A high concentration of retinol (such as with 1.0%) increases the conversion rate of retinol-to-retinoic acid. The higher the concentration of retinol, therefore, the greater the conversion to retinoic acid, and the better the result.
- Scientists agree that an even higher concentration (for ex., 2% or 3% or 4%) would be even more effective, however the product would be extremely and unacceptably irritating. 1% is the ideal "cap rate"—the greatest concentration of retinol, with little to no irritation.
- Time-Released Microspheres. Traditional retinol products cause a sudden release and "downpour" of retinol—which can be irritating. That’s why manufacturers use a very low concentration of retinol. ZO® Skin Health’s Radical Night Repair Plus uses a unique delivery system–the retinol is encapsulated in a time-released microsphere. So unlike the "downpour", micro-spheres causes a slow, steady, continuous “drizzle”.
- Anhydrous (water-free) formula increases the potency of active ingredients.
- Skinasensyl®, a peptide that increases skin’s natural tolerance threshold. Users are much less likely to experience any discomfort, which is especially beneficial to over-reactive and sensitive skin.

How to UseCONTAINS 1% RETINOL
Due to the concentration of retinol (at least 6X the industry norm), this is a very potent product. Initially some dryness, irritation and peeling are normal. These symptoms typically develop 3-7 days following the first application and indicate skin cells are awakening, and damaged skin is being repaired.
If you are not currently using retinol, begin gradually.
Following cleansing, apply 1-2 pumps twice a week in the evening, 30 minutes before retiring. Increase frequency to alternate nights—and then every night—as tolerated.
For best results, use as part of a ZO® Skin Health regimen (see below).

Before & After
FAQOssential™ Radical Night Repair Plus
Q&A
My face is peeling. Should I stop using the product?
Peeling is proof that old dead skin cells on the surface are being removed. Through this exfoliating process, newer, younger, healthier skin cells will emerge. The peeling will last only about two weeks, and when it does stop, you should increase the frequency of application of Radical Night Repair Plus.
When should I start using the product on a nightly basis?
As soon as your skin can tolerate it. That varies by individual, but generally, by the third week, you can apply it on alternate nights, and after 6-8 weeks, apply nightly.
I have a big event, and don’t want my skin to be peeling. What should I do?
Exfoliate your skin with ZO® Skin Health Offects® Exfoliating Polish right before the event. If you are experiencing any redness, stop using the product three days before the event, and then resume afterward. My skin is very sensitive and feels irritated. What can I put on it? Apply a 1% hydrocortisone cream. If the irritation persists for more than a week, see a dermatologist.
OTHER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ZO SKIN HEALTH
ANSWERS
1. What, exactly, is healthy skin?
When your skin is healthy, it's in great condition, and has:
- Even tone. No discoloration, blotchiness, rosacea, blemishes.
- Soft, supple, and even texture.
- No fine lines, no wrinkles, no crow's feet. Horizontal lines make you look unhappy, and vertical lines make you look old.
- Firmness and resilience. Replenished collagen and elastin network.
- Radiance and clarity.
2. Do I have to see a doctor?
It’s not necessary to see a physician before buying ZO® Skin Health, but it’s always a good idea to see with a physician periodically. A dermatologist or plastic surgeon can give you medical treatments that are otherwise not available. If you’re interested in Obagi Medical Products, check out their physician locator at www.healthxchange.com/clinic-finder
3. What results should I expect from using ZO® Skin Health?
You should see firmer skin, smoother texture, diminished lines and wrinkles, more even skin tone and improved radiance.
4. Should ZO® Skin Health be used instead of Obagi Nu-Derm?
While the two brands share the same philosophy, and were both developed by Dr. Zein Obagi, ZO® Skin Health is a cosmeceutical line (sold without a prescription) and Obagi Nu-Derm contains prescription-strength ingredients, and is therefore physician-dispensed. Together, the two brands complete what Dr. Zein Obagi calls “the circle of health”--a program for a lifetime of healthy skin.
ZO® Skin Health can be used as a prequel to Obagi Nu-Derm, in conjunction with it, or as part of the Nu-Derm maintenance program..
5. Should I use the entire ZO® Skin Health line?
No, you certainly shouldn’t use all of the products, only the ones that are recommended for your skin type. But we do recommend using an entire program, containing the five critical steps—cleanse, activate, stimulate, calm/nourish and protect. To re-energize aging skin, you need to constantly stimulate cellular function with stabilized retinol, advanced peptides and powerful anti-oxidants for continuous stimulation and repair. So the more saturated the skin is, the better response you'll get.
If you pick and choose between brands, it’s likely that you’ll miss some key active ingredients, or have a superfluous supply of others—more than your skin needs, or can even absorb.
6. What is retinol and how does it work?
A pure and active derivative of Vitamin A, retinol stimulates skin cells. Use of retinol has also been shown to stimulate new collagen production. Retinol is one of the few substances with a small enough to penetrate the outer layers of the skin and work to repair the lower layers of the skin where collagen and elastin reside. Skin will appear smoother, softer, pores will appear smaller and less noticeable, and signs of aging will begin to diminish. Retinol in its purest form will give your skin the most anti-aging, acne-fighting, and skin smoothing benefits possible. The increased cell turnover caused by retinol has also been shown to be particularly helpful on acne patients. The skin exfoliation unclogs pores and helps fade acne scars.
7. Is retinol safe? Can it cause irritation/sensitivity?
If your skin is particularly sensitive or you have rosacea, you may want to try a spot test first. Some tingling or irritation is called the retinoid effect, and is a temporary acclimation of the skin to retinol. Generally, skipping every other night in the beginning should allow skin to adjust. You may notice some increased sensitivity during usage, so make sure to use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 before spending time in the sun. If ZO® Skin Health products cause significant irritation, please discontinue use.
8. Why do I experience breakouts and peeling?
Breaking out and peeling is the natural way for the skin to free itself from previous damage and expels to the surface everything that was sitting under the stratum corneum. This "purging" is caused by retinol and takes about 4 to 6 weeks for the skin to renew itself.
9. Why doesn't ZO® Skin Health have a moisturizer?
According to Dr. Zein Obagi, moisturizers give skin a smooth, silky feeling but with repeated use, skin becomes addicted to them. Instead of causing the skin's cells to function properly, the way that nature intended, skin cells become fat and happy, lazy and slow down. Then the skin becomes sensitive, intolerant and the signs of aging rapidly increase. ZO® Skin Health offers cremes to calm and nourish redness and irritation, brighten and even skin tone. These Ommerse products moisturize the skin, but are not intended to be used to the exclusion of products that activate and stimulate your skin.
10. Can I use ZO® Skin Health products after cosmetic procedures?
ZO® Skin Health products are formulated to be safe and effective for all skin types. You can use them after non-invasive procedures such as Botox®, fillers, light-peels, etc. Ask your physician about any other type of procedures.
11. Are ZO® Skin Health products safe to use during pregnancy or when nursing?
ZO® Skin Health has not performed clinical testing of its products on pregnant or nursing women to show that they are, or are not, safe to use. Ask your personal physician or dermatologist what is the best choice for you.
