Swimming is an excellent sport and a great way to relax. But from time to time it can be damaging to your skin. The extreme use of chemicals in the swimming pool tends to dry and darken the skin. It also claims to dry up the natural oils, harm the eyes and can also cause bacterial infections when not taken care of correctly. Swimming is a nice exercise and has great health benefits but if you aren’t careful enough then there is the chance that your skin will dry out and turn dull even before you know it. So, keep your skin healthy with these tips:
#1 – Shower Prior/After Swimming
The pre-swim shower helps reduce the irritating, smelly substances formed in pool water when impurities introduced from the bodies of swimmers combine with chlorine. Many individuals identify that smell as the smell of chlorine. (A recent survey found 40 percent of people believe the characteristic chemical odour of some swimming pools in an indicator of a clean pool). However, that odour is not from chlorine, but from irritants produced when chlorine reacts with impurities. When swimmers shower away impurities they help reduce the risk of waterborne illnesses, such as diarrhea, swimmer’s ear and skin infections. So, always shower before (and after) swimming.
#2 – Moisturise
Put plenty of moisturizer on your skin after swimming so that while your skin is damp, most of the cream will be absorbed. This will keep the dryness in check. It is also a good idea to apply a light waterproof body lotion before you take a dip. For example, you can try to use Obagi skin care products, which is perfect due to the natural ingredients and ability to provide long-lasting effect.
#3 – Hydrate Your Body
Drinking lots of water is essential when you are swimming. While doing this exercise, keeping your body hydrated is a very good idea. Moreover, a regular intake of fresh fruits and vegetables with vitamin C and A will give your skin that much needed glow.
#4 – Take Care of Your Hair
Don’t expose the scalp to the swimming pool impurities as they may cause infection, dandruff problems, drying of scalp etc. Always massage hair and scalp with a good oil before getting into the water as it will not allow the skin to hold and absorb any kind of dirt.
In summary, whilst swimming is a wonderful way to tone your body, the same cannot be said for the skin. So, don’t hesitate to use these tips in order to keep your skin beautiful and healthy!
