A Guide to Skin Types

by Posted in Skin .

Being clued up on skin types is important because the more you know, the more you can determine your own skin type. Knowing your skin type is important so you can get the right products for you. Dermatologists believe it’s better to have products aimed at people with particular type of skin than having “one-size-fits-all” products because different skin has different needs. Determining your type of skin and fitting the products to it is the first step to healthy, problem-free skin.

There are five basic types of skin: oily, combination, normal, dry and sensitive. These are mainly determined by their moisture composition but can also be determined by your skin’s ability to repair. You can also have a combination of different skin types on your body and you can have sensitive skin no matter what the oil content. You skin type changes throughout your life as your hormonal levels change: typically you have oily skin during adolescent years and your skin becomes drier throughout life.

Normal

Your type of skin is determined by the amount of water, amount of fatty lipids and the level of tolerance to foreign substances. If you have normal skin then you are very lucky to have skin that is balanced in moisture and isn’t sensitive to products. Still this doesn’t mean that you should neglect your skin: make sure you follow the same cleansing, toning and moisturising process that is recommended for everyone as this will help to fight bacteria and will ensure your skin stays supple and vibrant. We recommendObagi Nu-Derm Exfoderm for normal skin. The phytic acid formula gently removes dead skins cells, revealing a glowing complexion.

Combination

Combination skin is awkward because it can be very oily in patches but dry in others. Yu will find oil on your t-zone which includes your forehead, nose, pores of the side of your nose and chin. Dry areas can include your cheeks, jaw and parts of your forehead. Combination skin can dry out easily in cold weather leading to flaking on the nose. Other characteristic problems include dilated pores in the t-zone, blackheads and shininess. Obagi Clenziderm MD Pore Therapy is clinically proven to unblock pores, kill acne causing bacteria and balance the moisture of the skin.

Dry

It will be obvious if you have dry skin as it will feel tight and often be flaky or irritated. When you are young, having dry skin isn’t a bad thing because people with dry complexions barely develop conditions such as acne; however, as you age you may find your skin is prone to developing wrinkles and sore patches. It is important to look after your dry skin as the problem can be exacerbated by factors such as cold climates, wind, sun exposure, HVAC systems, steamy showers or harsh soap products. For dry skin we recommend using Obagi hydrate after cleansing to restore a healthy moisture balance and to nourish the skin.

Oily

You can tell if you have oily skin if it is shiny, sticky and prone to problems such as acne and blackheads. First thing in the morning, take a tissue and blot it on your face: if there are dark patches of grease then you have naturally oily skin. People make the mistake of rigorously scrubbing oily skin in an attempt to remove bacteria, but this can cause the sebaceous glands to work even harder. Instead of further irritating the skin, ensure bacteria are killed and skin cleansed by using lustre pure light acne therapy. This system works by channelling blue light which kills the acne causing bacteria and it also fades redness without irritating the skin.

Sensitive

As its name suggests sensitive skin is an issue in itself. This type of skin can be either dry or oily, although it is normally characterised by feeling tight. Sensitive skin is prone to flaring up and doesn’t react well to a large variety of products.  Sensitive skin can also itch very easily and is prone to burning so you must take extra care in the sun. To sooth sensitive skin, Skinstation recommend cleansing with Obagi Nu Derm gentle cleanser and using a good moisturiser to improve the elasticity. If your skin is prone to flaring up avoid exfoliating, avoid harsh soaps and detergents and stay away from the sun.

Skinstation stock a wide variety of products that help combat all types of skin problems. By using our products in a routine you can care for your skin and restore its balance, leaving you confident and radiant.
