Whilst you’re young, it’s often tempting to be a little complacent with your skin care regime, after all – you’re beautiful. But during those sizzling summers or icy winters, it never harms to take a little extra care when it comes to your skin.
Maybe you haven’t suffered from sun burn since you were a teenager, you consider yourself an expert of antioxidant-rich food, and you ditched the cigarettes back in 2004 – but what do you know really about anti-ageing? It’s hard to know what the best form of action to take is when there are so many misconceptions, myths and tips surrounding the beauty world. But, as experts of skin care – we’re here to rid the fact from the fiction and provide you with everything you need to know about the ageing process and your skin. Enjoy.
MYTH: Everyone’s skin ages the same way.
FACT: If you’re of an oily complexion – you’re lucky! Although you may have cursed your T-zone back in school, natural oil actually moisturises your skin, and protects it from aging. Dry skin shows fine lines earlier, no thanks to an impaired outer barrier that lets youth-preserving moisture out and ageing irritants in.
MYTH: Daily exfoliating keeps your skin looking young.
FACT: This isn’t entirely false, although for some skin types, daily peels or exfoliating scrubs can do some serious damage to your skin. if you suffer from eczema, rosacea or sensitive skin, you can over-exfoliate and irritate your skin. It is best off to opt for gentle exfoliation for all skin types, over abrasive and aggressive options.
MYTH: Standing in the shade protects you from UV damage.
FACT: Just because you can’t feel the sun on your skin, doesn’t meant that it is not being affected by ultraviolet radiation. Whenever you spend time outside, even in the shade, the scattered solar beams present in the atmosphere during daylight hours can account to up to 80% of your annual dose of UV exposure. Sun damage is cumulative, especially during the warmer months, so aim to wear an SPF of at least 30 all year round.
MYTH: Your diet has nothing to do with how your skin ages.
FACT: Although once considered a myth, this statement has now been proven very much true. We recommend avoiding high-glycemic foods such as rice, pasta, bread and sugary sweets. These food types trigger the body to produce insulin, which causes age-accelerating inflammation, so try to load up on colourful vegetables instead to fight swelling and redness.
MYTH: Wrinkles are formed by facial expressions.
FACT: This can be true, however the same skin folding that causes wrinkles when you move your face, can also happen through other activities such as sleeping. Skin produces less elastic tissue over time, which means that it can’t bounce back as easily.
MYTH: The more products you use, the better!
FACT: There’s a common belief that if a little bit of something works well, then more must work even better. In some cases, this may be correct, however when it comes to the ageing of skin, that isn’t necessarily the case. By using more than one product, you are risking the chance of irritation, so whatever you do – don’t overdo it on any anti-ageing skin care product.
