BB Creams: What Do They Do?
BB Creams seem to have burst onto the beauty scene lately and every brand has its own version; but what exactly are they?
BB cream stands for blemish balm, blemish base, beblesh balm, and more commonly, beauty balm. BB creams have cross-cultural allure; they were a German invention, yet became alarmingly popular in Asia, and have since become the latest beauty trend in Western countries such as the UK and America.
In the 1960s, dermatologist Dr Christine Schrammek M.D developed her beauty balm to protect her patients’ skin after facial peels and cosmetic surgery. Due to the fragile condition of her patients’ skin, the beauty balm concealed redness, as a foundation would, but also played the part of moisturiser and sun cream. Essentially, a blemish balm is a tinted moisturiser with extra benefits, which improves and protects the skin as it provides foundation-like coverage.
BB cream was introduced to South Korea and Japan in 1985. In Asia, healthy-looking, porcelain skin is the epitome of beauty – and so, this seemingly magical cream was hailed as “the secret of Korean actresses,” and was heavily endorsed by Korean celebrities.
In 2009 the popularity of BB creams peaked in South Asia. “We have been selling more than 2,000 BB creams daily ever since the products became popular among Japanese tourists for their affordable price and good quality,” said Park Sung-eun, the marketing communication manager for Etude House. “Customers armed with a `wish list` typically buy more than five of them,” she added.
BB creams are promoted as being all-in-one facial cosmetic products to replace serum, moisturiser, primer, as well as acting as foundation and sun cream.
Vogue magazine recently named Dior’s DiorSkin Nude BB Cream their No. 1 BB cream product.
Of course, BB creams only work when they’re on your skin, and they don’t provide a long-term cure for blemishes. The Obagi Nu Derm system is clinically proven to brighten dull, sun-damaged skin, to significantly reduce pore size, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and eliminate acne and pigmentation. Though BB creams provide temporary topical coverage, a great skin care regime can dramatically alter the condition of your skin in a more permanent fashion.
