Cold Weather Skin Problems: Top Tips to Prevent Your Skin Drying up in Winter

by Posted in Skin, Face .

We might only be a week or so into October, but there is no denying that the temperature has started to drop dramatically outside. Apart from making it extremely hard to get out of bed in the morning, the cold weather also has a negative effect on our skin.

The cold weather and low humidity outside means that there is less moisture in the air – which leaves your skin feeling dry and looking dull. Not fun!

Before you start to panic, you should know that there are plenty of things you can do to avoid your skin falling victim to the dreary cold winter. Our simple and easy beauty tips will allow you to remain looking flawless throughout the next 4 or 5 months.

1. Avoid turning up the heat. The first thing that you will do when it starts to get colder is head straight to your heating to turn it up fully. This is a natural response to biting weather but it could actually be causing your skin more problems. The heat will dry your skin up, leaving it looking flaky and feeling uncomfortable.

We suggest buying a humidifier for the home. This will add moisture to the air, preventing your skin from drying out.

2. Stop taking hot showers. Taking a long hot shower is another temptation during the colder months. It might feel like the best thing ever on a particularly frosty morning, but your skin will definitely suffer because of it. It removes both water and natural oils from the skin – something you really don’t want to happen.

You should aim for warm showers that don’t last any longer than 10-15 minutes. It might seem like a punishment but your skin will definitely reap the benefits.

3. Pay close attention to your hands. The skin on your hands is a lot thinner than it is in most other places on your body. Unfortunately, this means that it’s harder to keep them smooth when the cold weather sets in. You’ll often find that you suffer from cracked skin – this will leave it feeling itchy.

Wear gloves whenever you go outside. Cotton gloves are better than wool as they don’t irritate as much.

4. Avoid face masks. Don’t be tempted to keep applying a face mask, in the hope that it will improve the appearance of your skin. Harsh peels or alcohol based masks could actually be stealing vital oils from your skin, something that you want to avoid.

Using cleansing milk is a lot better for your skin as it really actually hydrated the skin and bring back some moisture. However, you should still only use these sparingly.

If you are suffering from skin problems that just won’t clear up, no matter what you put on it, Skinstation have you covered.
