We would all love to have naturally long and thick eyelashes, but unfortunately this isn’t always the case. Sometimes, eyelashes just don’t seem to grow, and a lot of people are left with inadequate or not enough lashes – a condition that is referred to as hypotrichosis (loss or reduction in hair).
Latisse ® is a product which offers people the chance to grow fuller and darker eyelashes. It’s prescription based, which means that a medical consultation would have to be undertaken before purchase – but it’s definitely worth it for a lot of people.
What exactly is Latisse ®? Is it safe? Is it effective? We have answered some of these frequent questions about the product in this handy guide.
What is Latisse ®?
Latisse ® is a once a day treatment that is applied to the base of the upper eyelashes. It makes eyelash growth possible because of the active ingredient that it contains: Bimatoprost Opthalmic Solution. This affects the growth phase of the eyelashes in two different ways. It increases the length of the eyelashes, and then it increases the actual number of hairs present.
How is it applied?
The treatment should be applied once every night, and it’s important that instructions are carefully followed. It should be applied to the upper eyelashes only; it spreads to the lower eyelashes automatically. Your face should be free of makeup and should be washed clean before applying. It’s important that you apply the treatment carefully, as it can promote hair growth on areas of the skin that it has touched.
When will results be noticeable?
Everyone would love to see results in the first week but this is a treatment that you must be patient with – results will gradually start to appear. Some people have said that they start to see results after four weeks, whilst others have said that they haven’t seen results by eight weeks. It’s important that you don’t stop using the product; otherwise your eyelashes will slowly start to return to their previous state.
Results should appear by 16 weeks, with studies showing that people have noticed an eyelash growth of up to 25% and noticed that their lashes are definitely thicker and darker.
Can everyone use it?
Latisse ® is safe for most people, but that’s why it’s essential to have a medical consultation before purchasing the product. Those with eye or skin problems are urged to get advice from their doctors beforehand, and pregnant women are advised not to use it.
Are there any side effects?
As with any treatments, people may be affected in different ways. If you are worried about the health of your eyes after use, then we also urge you to seek advice from a medical professional. However, most people have experienced little to no side effects, with the most common problems being red or itchy eyes for a short time.
