We all know that prevention is better than cure. Despite this, most of us are guilty of investing in skincare that works to reverse skin damage rather than prevent it- an all too simple mistake to make given we often don’t recognise the damage until it’s too late! What many of us don’t realise however, is that the simple act of using sunscreen habitually can be one of the most powerful defenses against a range of skin concerns. Whilst some make up excuses to avoid using sunscreens; it’s too sticky, it has a white film that changes the skin’s texture, it alters the effects of foundation, it’s easy to forget to apply and so on, the truth is, extreme sun exposure can cause photodamage to skin. But what is photodamage and what does it do to our skin?
What is photodamage?
Photodamage or what we commonly refer to as sun damage is a term that’s used to describe what happens to the skin as a result of long-term exposure to UVA and UVB radiation. The damage can manifest in different ways such as resulting in the appearance of lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, age spots, freckles, skin thinning, uneven skin tone and in extreme cases, skin cancer.
How to prevent photodamage?
Although there are certain elements of photoageing that are deemed unavoidable, it is not entirely impossible to prevent visible signs of ageing. Just by using sunscreen that is at least SPF 30, you can already increase your chances of keeping photoageing well at bay.

Obagi’s Professional-C Suncare contains in 10% L-Ascorbic acid which helps to defend your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, free radicals that cause fine lines, sun damage and dark spots, and at the same time nourishes, brightens, and rejuvenates your skin for that added glow.
Other than using sunscreens to protect your skin from photodamage, there is also host of skincare serums designed to protect you from harmful UV rays that you can use to help fight the signs of ageing. One powerful ingredient found in serums that you should look for that is very efficient in UV skincare protection is vitamin C or L-Ascorbic acid.
• Obagi Professional C Serum in 10%, 15%, and 20% - This gentle serum is perfect if you have dry, sensitive and reactive skin. It helps in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and even helps in stimulating the production of collagen for firmer and more resilient skin. If you have an uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation, it can help lighten and brighten the skin too.
Take care of your skin. It is easier to prevent skin issues before they occur rather than looking for ways to fully remedy the damage. Again, prevention is always better than cure!
