Being stressed can have drastic effects on your skin without you even realising. Healthy skin is highly important as it gives us confidence and makes us feel great – something we definitely want on our wedding day!
In our last blog we discussed skincare nightmares that could occur on your wedding day. Unfortunately, these are not the only things you need to watch out for. Stress is an emotion that can easily cause havoc without you even realising.
Planning a wedding can cause a huge amount of stress, and as the day dawns, your skin may not beat its best. Everybody wants to look flawless and elegant on their wedding day, but unfortunately, skin can easily be irritated, and there are so many different things that can cause this.
There are lots of issues that stress can cause for your skin.
Stress increases the hormone cortisol, which damages the skin’s ability to hold on to water. This moisture loss also diminishes luminosity, and the resulting look leaves dryness over your skin which can be very irritable.
Stress triggers an elevation in your blood sugar, which – via a process called glycation - damages collagen and elastin, which are the protein fibres that plump your skin and keep it smooth. With constant muscle tension, it can lead to permanent wrinkling.
The increased blood flow that occurs when you’re under duress may cause capillaries to expand. As stress weakens your immune system, flare-ups occur more regularly and last longer.
If you’re finding yourself looking worse for wear on days when you’re panicked, there’s a reason behind this. Angst causes your skin to look dull, lose volume and an uptick in acne. Stress and anxiety have a deleterious effect on DNA in the cells.
Telomeres – which are caps at the end of each strand of DNA, protect our chromosomes and affect how fast our cells age are shorter with stress. As telomere length shortens, cells die off or become damaged.
Anxiety causes a chain reaction, which in turn can lead to sleepless nights. This causes puffiness around the eyes which can result in noticeable darkness circling the eyes.
With wanting to look your best on your wedding day, you must avoid the stress that can lead to these factors affecting your skin.
If you find yourself letting stress effect your skin, there are ways to handle it better. Here are some ways to reduce the effects of stress on your skin.
