Working out can do wonders for your mind, body and overall health. But did you know it also benefits your skin? Working out regularly helps our body’s to maintain a healthy level of the stress-related hormone cortisol. This healthy balance prevents overproduction of collagen which can lead to an increase in wrinkles, breakouts and the breakdown of collagen which results in premature sagging and loss of skin firmness. Not only this, but aerobic exercise also stimulates the blood flow around the body, delivering a hit of oxygenated blood to your face. Working out will give you a healthy glow, even after washing off the sweat.
Whilst working out can help us maintain a firm, supple and dewy complexion, it can also lead to breakouts and clogged pores. With proper care you can make sure your Spin Class is just a workout for your body, not your skin.
Exercising inevitably results in getting a little sweaty. Whilst working up a sweat is great for our overall health, sweat on the face can be damaging to the glowy complexion we’ve been working so hard towards. When sweat is left on the face it can result in a buildup of bacteria where pores are clogged with dirt, sweat and dead skin cells. So if you want to avoid a side of breakouts with your HIIT workout, then a post-workout skincare routine is absolutely essential. So what do you apply after a workout?
What To Apply After A Workout
Remove sweaty clothes
The clothes you tend to workout in are generally tight to the skin and aren’t particularly breathable. Whilst they may look cute whilst on, it is important to remove these items as soon after you’ve finished exercising as possible and before you begin your skincare routine. The compressive nature of these items trap the oils, sweat and dead skin cells against the skin, creating the perfect storm for a breakout.
Wash your face
Skincare 101 is to wash your face immediately after working out. Before you’ve even left the gym, make sure you use a gentle facial cleanser to remove the sweat, dirt and oils from your face.We recommend Obagi’s Gentle Cleanser to remove impurities and leave skin feeling smooth and fresh. After cleansing we also suggest using a splash of cool water. Not only will this help you cool down, but it will also close your pores too.
However, make sure you do not touch your face before washing your hands first! The bacteria and oils from the machines or yoga matts are a cocktail for disaster when it comes to skin!
If you don’t have access to running water, if for example you are working out in the park, then cleansing facial wipes are a great alternative. The newly launched Suzan Obagi MD Cleansing Wipes are perfect for throwing in your gym bag.
Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise
Whilst it may feel like the dose of sweat has quenched your skin’s thirst for moisture, the loss of hydration is felt by your skin too. After you have cleansed your skin, apply a hydrating moisturiser to your face, but don’t forget your body too! We recommend Dr Barbara Sturm’s Anti-Aging Body Cream, packed with nutrient rich oils that will offer long-lasting hydration and help to restore the skin’s elasticity, win win!
The sooner you can return skin to normal temperature the better. For a refreshing and moisturising hit we recommend Dr Barbara Sturm Hydrating Face Mist. Not only will this feel absolutely amazing, this facial mist will give your skin a refreshing boost of hydration whilst plumping the skin, reducing the formation of wrinkles and leaving your skin looking radiant and refreshed.
After a workout and skincare routine it is often easy to miss this essential step. Even if you applied sunscreen earlier that day, you would have sweated most of it out and the rest would have been removed by your post-workout skincare routine. So before leaving the gym or the house for the day… reapply! Explore our range of everyday SPF today.
P.s. A top tip is to also remove your make-up prior to working out. The combination of makeup and sweat can result in even more stubbornly clogged pores, resulting in breakouts and blackheads!
