Importance of Skincare Routines for Men

by Posted in Skin .
It is well known that skincare is important; advertisements are directed towards keeping skin healthy and young looking, and typically target women. However, men’s skincare routines are just as important! While skin is very similar in both genders and routines depend on skin type, men’s skin is slightly different and requires a tailored routine.

How is Men’s Skin Different?

Men’s skin is typically thicker than women’s, with the dermis containing more collagen and the epidermis providing more protection against external ageing factors. As testosterone is higher in men, the skin tends to be oilier, with sebaceous glands producing more sebum. This adds an extra layer of protection against the elements, but it also means that men’s pores are more prone to blockages and acne.

Skincare Routine

Exfoliating is important to remove dead skin cells, unclog your pores, and ensure your skin is clean and fresh. In addition, it exposes you beard hair follicles, preventing irritating ingrown hairs. You’ll get a healthy looking skin with one exfoliation a week –  before shaving!

As men’s skin is oilier, you need to utilise an oil-free moisturiser as part of your skin routine. External pollutants, shaving, and even washing your face (especially with soap) dries your skin considerably. As you age, your skin will naturally lose collagen and elasticity, causing it to wrinkle easily. It is vital moisturise your skin daily to replenish its natural moisture, as it helps to prevent fine wrinkles.

Sun protection is just as important! The sun is extremely damaging to your skin and any damage is irreversible. Too much exposure is harmful, which is why an SPF moisturiser should be part of your skincare routine. Both UVA and UVB ray protection helps to prevent premature ageing.

Why Does a Skincare Routine Matter?

Alongside keeping your skin healthy and clean, a good skincare routine helps to prevent acne and build-ups of oil and dead skin cells. Dirt gets trapped in your skin, blocking your pores and bacteria can easily penetrate your skin and cause adult acne. Premature ageing is also a big factor to consider; the earlier you start taking care of your skin, the longer it will keep its young, healthy glow!
