Is Your Bathing Regime Ruining Your Skin?

by .

It’s expected that our skin will suffer from wear and tear as we get older, and we do everything we can to maintain youthful looking skin, but there are a range of factors that could suggest you’re doing damage to your skin during your daily bathing routine without noticing. In most cases, it all boils down to loss of moisture in our skin, which can lead to other skin symptoms such as eczema, skin infections, and allergies.

Is your water too hot?

In the winter especially, the natural reaction to the cold is to warm up as quickly as possible, so when we hop into the shower we turn it up as high as we can stand. As good as it feels at the time to spend half an hour standing under intense heat, it causes skin to become inflamed, which causes redness, itchiness and peeling.

Are you bathing too frequently?

It may be the case that you’re showering too much. Even though it’s important to keep good hygiene to avoid a build up of bacteria and skin infections, washing to excess could do more harm than good. Your skin produces natural oils which in turn creates a layer of protective ‘lipids’ which help maintain moisture.

Bathing too regularly causes this layer to break and with too little time between washing, this layer doesn’t have time to rejuvenate again to protect the healthy skin underneath. This can lead to over-sensitive skin getting irritated easily.

Remember to moisturise!

If you’re particularly susceptible to dry skin, you must make sure that you moisturise after bathing. Especially with the combination of water that is too hot and frequent bathing, your skin is bound to be tight and dry. It’s advised that you use a hypo-allergenic moisturiser to massage into your skin very shortly after towel drying to trap water by adding oils to your skin – the oils also help to replace natural oils lost during bathing.

Whatever your sensitivity, Skinstation can supply a range of products suited to your skin such as Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser to use whilst bathing, or SkinCeuticals Redness Neutraliser to reduce inflamed and irritated skin. However, if you’re looking to rejuvenate more than just your skin, we also offer Obagi ELASTILash products for thicker, fuller lashes as well as Revitabrow Advanced Eyebrow Conditioner to enhance the look of luxurious eyebrows.
