Summer is just around the corner, and of course, everybody dreams of radiant and beautiful soft skin to wear those summer dresses in perfect body confidence. Well, the good old ‘you are what you eat’ has never been truer. Here at Skinstation, we have put together a few nutrition tips to give you healthy and gorgeously glowing skin just in time for the sunshine.
In order to encourage old skin cells to shed and be replaced by younger cells, a balanced diet of the right foods can often be the best skin care regime for any individual to support this positive cell growth. In order to keep your skin soft, blemish-free and healthy, eat the correct foods in a nutritional balance to give your body the vital nutrients it needs.
Less is more
In summer, wear minimal makeup and let your natural skin breath. The sun can be a wonderful thing for your skin and can clear it of toxins and dead cells, but be sure to protect your skin if you are of a paler complexion or burn quite easily. Always use sun cream and after-sun products to nourish and give your skin a barrier if it has been exposed to the sun’s rays for a longer period of time than the recommended allowance per day. (10-20 minutes per day for pale skin types and 20-30 minutes per day for darker skin tones.)
Eat your 5-a-day
Fruit and vegetables contain natural antioxidants which protect your skin from cellular damage. This damage is caused by free radicals including pollution, sun exposure and smoking, which can result in age spots, wrinkling and the early aging of skin cells.
Aim for at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day in an array of colours and textures. Super foods include pumpkin, carrots, sweet potatoes, kale and spinach which contain high antioxidants which encourage a healthy skin tone and natural skin cell development.
Water your skin
Your skin needs to be moisturised in order to stay supple. Try to drink 6 – 8 glasses of water a day, all fluids count towards your daily allowance; however, water is the best due to its purity and body cleansing qualities. Herbal teas, such as dandelion and green tea are perfect for refreshing and detoxing the body and skin. Even mild dehydration can cause skin to become dry and look tired, also try to avoid excessive alcohol consumption as it can age and dehydrate the skin.
Stop the crash diets
Ignore the latest fad or fashionable diet, losing and re-gaining weight can heavily affect the skins elasticity and cell quality. By stretching and re-stretching skin, you may be left with sagging or looseness of skin, stretch marks and excessive wrinkles.
Crash diets often encourage the reduction of essential vitamins for replacement supplements, and over long periods of time this can cause skin damage and early aging. Fruit, vegetables and natural sugars and fats from foods such as fish, tomatoes, nuts and seeds are the perfect diet for any healthy body!
