Micellar Water: The New Cleansing Trend

by Posted in Skin .

Everyone is talking about it, but what exactly is micellar water, and how good is it for you?

Here at Skinstation, our passion is skincare and we are always excited to learn about new products, so let’s take a deeper look into this new cleansing product!

So, What is Micellar Water?

Micellar water originated in France in the 90’s, as a one-step cleansing skincare product designed to help Parisian women to cleanse their faces. This was due to water in Paris being too harsh on the skin, and no one wants to aggravate painful skin more with poor quality water!

The formula contains no harsh cleansing agents, like some cleansing lotions, and gently cleans and refreshes skin; removing make-up and ridding the skin of excess sebum on a daily basis without having to form a rigorous washing regime with countless products.

How Does It Work?

The micellar water formula contains certain molecules called surficants which have a “head” which is attracted to water and a “tail” that loves oil and grease. This means that it collects excess oil from the skin by joining the purified water which makes up the liquid of the solution to the oils in your skin which would otherwise be repelled by the water.

These molecules group up to form a micelle (we thought you’d be wondering where the name comes from, so here you go!) which have the water-loving “head” on the outside with the oil attracting tails pointing inside to prevent them repelling the water.

These surficants are present in other cleansing products, but as the ones used in micellar water are made to be extremely mild, they are able to be left on the skin without causing any irritation.

How do I use it?

Using micellar water is very simple. Rather than having multiple harsh chemicals for the various stages of a cleansing routine, the micellar water does it all in one handy formula; cleansing, toning and brightening your skin all at the same time.

Simply drip some of the formula onto a cotton pad and sweep across your face; concentrating on the areas you have most makeup on. And that’s it. No need to dry your face, just apply your moisturiser and you are good to go! It really is that simple!

Does it Have To Be a Cotton Pad?

We recommend cotton pads, as cotton contains the water loving molecules too! So when you pour your micellar water onto a cotton pad, the “heads” are attracted to the same molecules in the micellar water, allowing the “tails” to stick up and collect the oils from the skin when wiped on the face!

Can’t I Just Use Purified Water?

There’s nothing stopping you reaching for your purified water and giving your face a good clean. However, you will be missing out on all the toning and deep cleansing properties of the micellar water.

Those surficant molecules we talked about above are the key to getting that ultra clean feeling, as the “tails” attract the oil and grease built up on the surface of the skin, which makes getting rid of that pesky make-up a whole lot easier!

Will It Work on My Skin Type?

The beauty of micellar water is that its formula is so simple, it can be used on pretty much any skin type.

With no harsh chemicals, it makes cleaning sensitive skin and acne-prone skin stress free, as well as dramatically decreasing the shininess of oily skin.

Dry skin also benefits from the water’s deep cleansing properties, but we would recommend moisturising afterwards, as we don’t want that gorgeous skin of yours getting too dry!
