Most of us are well-versed in the three-step cleanse, tone and moisturise routine, and once we find products that we like, we tend to stick with them. It might not even occur to you to change your cleanser when there’s a season change. So, the question is should we be using seasonal skincare, and does it really make any difference?
Actually, colder weather and low humidity means that your skin changes too. And now that the northern hemisphere is heading full throttle towards winter, you may already have noticed that you have a drier complexion. If so, that’s a clear signal to act.
Why Does Skin Change in Winter?
There are a couple of factors that contribute to drier winter skin. First off, the crisp, chilly air doesn’t retain moisture as well as warm air and cold, face-numbing winds only add to the problem.
Secondly, we just love to whack that central heating up to full, don’t we? I mean, come on, it’s the season for hibernation after all. The issue with central heating is that it also strips moisture from the air.
Then there are all those hot baths we’re taking and guess what? They dry the skin out too. So it shouldn’t come as any real surprise that the skin on our face and body suffers with dryness.
Do You Need to Change Your Cleanser in Winter?
Rather than using cleansers with stronger, harsher ingredients, stick to those that are gentler, creamier or that contain active components that help to retain moisture. That doesn’t necessarily mean thick cleansers or heavy cleansers. These days, with all the advancements, they can come in all shapes and sizes.
Dry skin can also be especially sensitive so check labelling for dermatologist-tested products that are non-irritant.
The Moisturising Cleanser
We can’t get enough of Obagi Nu-Derm® Fx Gentle Cleanser. This is a wonderfully hydrating gel formulation, which effectively removes makeup, impurities, and oil residue, without drying skin out.
Oat Amino Acids give skin a deep cleanse, whilst protective Aloe, packed full of antioxidants and vitamins, neutralises the harmful effects of UV rays which are still about in winter. Pack this one if you’re off to the slopes because UV rays are strongest when reflected off snow!
Not to mention that there are a whole host of other moisture-rich ingredients, like Apricot Kernel Oil, a moisture retainer that’s often used for dry and sensitive skin, and Panthenol which aids skin by holding onto water and decreasing the amount of water evaporating through the outer layers of skin. There’s also well-known humectant, Glycerin to give dehydrated skin an extra shot of much-needed moisture. Skin is left looking thoroughly nourished and radiant and with a watertight barrier.
The Sensitive Skin Cleanser
Formulated for dry, sensitive, or traumatized skin, SkinCeuticals Gentle Cream Cleanser is a multi-use cleanser. In fact, it’s so unbelievably gentle that it can be used several times a day. A non-irritating creamy cleanser, this soothes and calms the skin with its powerful combination of emollients and skin conditioning ingredients.
Orange Oil is in there to maintain the health and appearance of the skin, improving radiance and promoting a smoother texture, whilst Allantoin, a component derived from the root of the comfrey plant has soothing and protective qualities. Perfect for dried out, irritable winter skin, this one can also be used after having skin procedures.
The Dual-Action Cleanser
At this time of year, skin can become especially lack-lustre and dull. Sometimes it just needs a good old fashioned deep cleanse and exfoliation to restore it back to full radiance. If that’s needed, try using the twice-daily MZ Skin Cleanse & Clarify Dual Action AHA Cleanser and Mask.
This advanced, dermatologically tested, exfoliating formulation uses a remarkably effective blend of low level AHAs and invigorating papaya fruit enzymes. The effect of which is to breakdown and digest larger proteins that have accumulated on the skin. So you can say goodbye to dead skin cells, dirt and debris and hello to clearer skin and refined pores. It also boosts cell renewal without any abrasiveness or irritation, helping to keep skin looking youthful and promotes collagen production, which keeps skin nicely plumped up.
By clearing out all of the undesirable debris, skin is also prepared for the ultimate absorption of follow-on serums and moisturisers. After use, skin appears luminous, smoother, and healthier looking, bringing much needed radiance to those dark winter days.
