Tackling Teenage Skin Problems: Advice For Teenagers

Being a teenager is stressful enough without adding skin trouble to the mix. It’s unfortunate then that skin problems often come with the territory of being a teenager, and many young people will have trouble with their skin to some extent. However, if you start looking after your skin whilst you are still young, you have more chance of preventing further problems when you are older.

Whilst some people are born with perfect complexions, most people have to work hard for it. This is why here at Skinstation, we specialise in high quality skin care products such as Obagi Clear and Obagi Nu-Derm.

We also provide products that are perfect for helping to fight teenage skin problems such as acne. These products include our Obagi Clenziderm range which comes in a cleanser, cream and lotion.

But what exactly are the most common teenage skin problems? And can they be prevented? Read on for some advice for managing young skin.

Common Teenage Skin Problems

Spots

Spots are something that most people suffer with at some point in their lives, although some suffer with them more than others. We would go as far to say that spots are a big part of being a teenager, and most young people will get a spot here or there throughout their teenage years.

Spots occur for teenagers whilst they are going through puberty. This is because their hormones are changing, and this causes glands in the skin to produce excess sebum (oil) which will be in return cause the outbreak of spots. For many girls, spots will occur before and during a period.

To try reducing the amount of spots it’s important that young people wash their face regularly. Girls should always remember to take their makeup off.

Acne

Acne isn’t just a few spots; it’s a more extreme skin problem. It can be extremely distressing for a teenager who suffers from acne, as it can knock their self confidence.

A lot of people blame acne on eating too much junk food and not washing their face enough – both which are simply untrue. Whilst it’s important to wash your face and keep a healthy lifestyle, acne is a problem that arises from deep under the skin.

So what is acne? It occurs when someone is producing too much sebum, which forms a plug with dead skin cells that block the follicle. Bacteria on the skin, which is usually harmless, can then infect the blocked follicles. In return, you’re left with the red pus filled spots that are associated with acne.

Acne needs to be treated with special products, such as our Obagi Clenziderm range. Patience is needed, as clearing up acne can take weeks, months and sometimes years.

Managing Teenage Skin

Always Protect Your Skin

The most important thing that a young person can do, that anyone can do, is to protect their skin from the sun. Using sun cream can protect your skin from the sun and therefore limit your chances of getting skin cancer.

Not only can sun damage give you cancer, it also causes you to wrinkle earlier. In fact, around 90% of early aging is caused by the sun. Whilst you might not be thinking about this in your teenage years, you will be thankful for doing so later on in life.

Ditch The Soap

As a teenager, you might be tempted to just have a quick wash with water and soap in the morning. What most people aren’t aware of is that soap can be really bad for your skin.

It’s much more beneficial to your skin for you to find a facial cleanser that is perfect for your skin type. This should be used in the morning and before bed.

Whilst you can’t always prevent skin problems from happening, as you can’t change your genes, you can definitely do your very best to take good care for your skin so that you don’t suffer from further problems when you are older.

Here at Skinstation, we are dedicated to making people feel good in their own skin. Our range of skincare products are our way of helping people feel comfortable every day.
