Some people will do and try anything to get rid of spots. Spots and acne can cause a severe dip in confidence and can make people feel extremely self-conscious in front of company. There are many myths and old wife’s tales that people will grab on to in order to zap their zits as a quick fix for a party or date, but sometimes they can do more harm than good to our skin.
Many websites state that toothpaste is a miracle cure for spots and pimples, but many dermatology experts advise against using it. It can work differently for different people, and it also depends on what type of toothpaste you’re using.
Some toothpastes can react harshly to skin because it contains sodium fluoride which is a skin irritant. When the toothpaste is applied and eventually dries out, it can lead to dryness and itchiness which could leave your skin looking worse than it did to begin with!
Frequent Face Washing
Although it’s important to clear away a build up of bacteria on your skin, excessively washing your face will lead to a dry complexion and will remove any protective oils which your skin naturally produces.
Over-washing will trigger an over-production of sebum, which spots are made up of. Due to your skin not getting enough access to moisture, your system will overcompensate to replace what you’ve just washed off. Gently washing your face in the morning and at night with hypo-allergenic soaps or cleansers is more than enough.
People tend to avoid using face moisturisers because they think they’re greasy and that they will block pores. Whilst it’s advised to use a moisturiser that suits your skin type, you shouldn’t avoid using them altogether.
Similar to over-washing your face, depriving your skin of hydration after you’ve dried it out by washing will again lead to it making up for lost moisture with the over-production of oils which will lead to spots.
There has been no proven link between wearing make-up and acne, and although wearing no make-up allows your skin to breathe, foundation does no real harm to your complexion. These days, a lot of make-up contains ingredients that are beneficial to the skin with many brands using natural minerals to improve complexion.
However, it’s important to make sure you take off any make-up at the end of the day so that you avoid the production of bacteria which will irritate your skin. It’s advised to apply make-up with washed, clean hands, or a clean make-up brush, to prevent the spread of bacteria on your skin.
