What age should men start a skincare routine?

The 20s is an exciting time with career, relationships, social life, and travel being the priorities. It’s not necessarily an era where much attention is paid to the skin. After all, we look young and healthy, live in the moment and ageing feels too far off to spend time worrying about it.

There are reasons though why it’s important to begin looking after skin before ageing begins. It may surprise you to hear that by the mid to late 20s, collagen production is already beginning to slow down. Why does that matter? Well collagen and elastin are the proteins that keep our skin elastic and when they dwindle, skin loses its elasticity, forming wrinkles.

Another factor to mention is that too many men don’t use SPF enough even when sunbathing. Unfortunately, whilst it might interrupt the traditional beer induced nap on the lounger, UV rays can do untold damage to the skin, causing skin cancer in the worst cases.

And none of this will not become apparent until some years later, when it’s too late to do anything about it. So, come on fella’s slip, slop, slap. Otherwise, by your thirties, you’ll already be seeing the effects of the sun through visible signs of ageing like fine lines and wrinkles.

What age should men start skincare?

It doesn’t matter about your gender, the earlier you take care of your skin, the better it will look.

So we should all begin to build healthy habits during our 20s to preserve and protect our skin. In fact, having a basic daily skincare routine will ensure that our skin stays younger and healthier, for much longer.

Easy Men's Skincare Routine

It’s easy to create a quick men’s skincare routine with a cleanser, toner, and moisturiser. Something like an Obagi® Facial Twin Kit Foaming Gel and Toner and Obagi Hydrate®. These are scientifically backed, clinically proven products that work in sync with each other and can work effectively for all skin types. That way, costs are kept down, and the simple fact is that we’re more likely to stick with something, if it’s quick and easy to carry out.

We also recommend the exceptional Obagi Sun Shield Matte SPF50 to offer broad spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Apply this after your facial moisturiser and allow it to absorb before going outside. And if you’re planning to be outside for any length, you should be reapplying this every 2 hours.

What age should men start using Anti-Aging Skincare?

You should start using some anti-ageing skincare at least by your late 20s or early 30s or earlier ideally. It’s really easy to enhance your basic skincare routine by incorporating anti-ageing products that work more deeply to transform the skin from within.

We’re talking about antioxidants to prevent future damage, chemical exfoliators to keep skin soft and supple and advanced anti-ageing serums like 111SKIN Cryo ATP Sports Booster, to target specific lines and wrinkles.

Dr. Barbara Sturm Men’s Discovery Kit is a great anti-ageing kit for men with everything you need to tackle a myriad of skincare concerns. Taking skincare that little bit further, these synergistic products will reveal a healthy, balanced complexion as well as tackling irritation and those visible signs of ageing head on.

DR DENNIS GROSS

Loved by Men

This anti-ageing skincare ritual begins with a balancing cleanser that leaves the skin perfectly prepared for the follow-on active and anti-ageing products. The facial scrub then effectively harnesses the properties of Vitamin A and Purslane to smooth and rejuvenate the skin. Even though it’s a chemical scrub, it’s non-drying and the complexion feels wonderfully hydrated because of the intensive moisture shot it provides.

Calming serum should be applied to calm any irritation or redness and soothe post-shave skin.  The hyaluronic anti-ageing serum, on the other hand protects skin from further damage by counteracting all the skincare nasties that attack skin on a daily basis, dirt, pollution, chemicals, sun, wind and so on. This one also has a calming effect and restores the skin’s moisture reservoirs, crucial in keeping skin looking and feeling healthy, nourished, and youthful.

The eye cream contains a bounty of enriching ingredients like golden root, sugar beet and yeast, around the eye area to reduce dark shadows, de-puff eye-bags and improve the appearance of fine lines. Finish with a final lick of Face Cream Men, a supreme anti-ageing hydrator with superhero ingredient, purslane, once again, to activate the skin’s antioxidant system, helping it to protect itself from premature ageing.  Don’t forget as always, to apply an SPF as your final and perhaps most important anti-ageing step!
