What Factor of SPF Should You Use In Your 40s

by .

Chances are that you‘ve heard the warnings about not wearing sunscreen. In fact, any time that you go outside, your skin is exposed to the sun’s radiation, even when it's cloudy, and this, of course, has a damaging effect. It’s still tempting to think that you don't need it or that sunscreen is only necessary in summer, but when you begin to add up all of the times that your skin is exposed, a different story begins to emerge. It’s the lunchtime walk, the weekend picnic, watching the kids at football or nipping out to the shop that matters.

The problem with UV radiation is that we can’t see it, so this hidden enemy is easily pushed aside or forgotten about. Truth is, many of us omit this crucial step in skincare, only to suffer the effects later down the line, either through sunburn or more slow developing issues like wrinkles or even skin cancer.

Skin damage from UV rays

Ultraviolet radiation is a form of electromagnetic energy which mainly comes from the sun. There are unnatural sources too, like tanning beds, lasers, and black lights which can equally have a damaging effect.

Energy from the UV radiation causes significant change within our skin cells, damaging its DNA which can lead to cell mutations, visible signs of premature ageing especially on the face like hyperpigmentation, dark spots, crepiness and wrinkles and the worst outcome, malignant melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer.

If you use Retinol or chemical exfoliators, don’t forget that those ingredients can also make skin more sensitive to the sun and more susceptible to damage. So, it’s a total no-brainer to incorporate sunscreen into your morning facial routine. Future-proofing your skin now with regular SPF means that you’ll reap rewards in future.

Types of SPF

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it blocks the sun’s radiation, preventing it from doing harmful damage to our skin.

It works by extending the skin’s natural defence against the sun’s rays. An SPF of 30 provides 30 times more protection than just your normal skin would without any sunscreen. Essentially it means that it takes longer for the skin to show the early signs of sun damage, a pinkness called erythema.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a good idea to expose yourself to direct sunlight for hours on end though. It’s advisable to reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours to all exposed areas of the skin for maximum protection whenever you’re in direct sunlight.

For outdoor activities, dermatologists recommend that a minimum SPF of 30 should be applied by all adults of all skin types. SPF 50 is a higher factor and protects skin for even longer. It’s a great choice for sun-sensitive skin or to give mature skin the optimum defence.

Be aware that it can take up to 30 minutes for sunscreen to be fully absorbed so make sure you apply it indoors well in advance. Using a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection means it will block out both UVA and UVB rays too.

Best SPF for Mature Skin

Sun damage causes fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and dark spots particularly on the face and around the eyes, often making us look older before our time. SkinCeuticals have cleverly developed targeted SPF products that address these issues. Suitable for all skin types, they’re especially perfect for mature skin or those with premature ageing.

Whilst the eye area is often the first area wrinkles appear, it often gets left out when it comes to applying SPF. SkinCeuticals Mineral Eye UV Defense SPF 30 uses 100% mineral filters for protecting and nourishing the thin, delicate skin around this area, including the lids.

It’s a wonderfully sheer formulation with a universal tint that unifies skin tone around the eyes. You can apply the weightless mousse from the brow bone to the cheek bone and even on the eyelid. Forget greasy eye make-up. This SPF also makes an ideal canvas for flawless make-up too.
