Winter-Proof Your Skin and Hair Care

by Posted in Skin .

The chilly airs and icy winds of winter can often prove problematic for your poor skin and hair, making it difficult to keep skin looking and feeling beautiful throughout the harsh season.

So, if you struggle to keep skin glowing throughout winter, or just need a little uplift to your skin care – here are a few helpful tips to winter-proofing your beauty regime and making sure your skin and hair are healthy and strong, whatever the weather!

Wrap up

It may seem obvious, but when the winter season starts to creep in – make sure you invest in a warm pair of gloves that will protect your hands and prevent skin from becoming flaky and dry. Waterproof gloves are recommended if you spend a lot of time outdoors. Wearing a hat will protect your hair from drying out and will also keep your head nice and warm. Too much exposure to harsh and cold weather will leave hair dry and brittle, making it far easier to become damaged.

Protect your hair from the weather

If you’re looking to keep your hair looking and feeling strong throughout the winter, adapt your hair care regime to suit the season! During the winter, hair will become dry, weak and brittle, so it’s important you provide it with nourishment in order to fight off the cold. Use shampoos and conditioners which aim to protect and heal your hair, making sure it’s given a little extra moisture than normal.

Adapt your beauty regime to suit the season

As with your hair, your skin care routine should also be adjusted to suit the season. During the winter, skin will often become drier; this is because your skin’s moisture is evaporated quickly by the wind, and skin doesn’t produce as much oil. Use a slightly heavier moisturiser than you often would in summer, making sure it’s suitable for your skin type.

Other beauty tips include washing your face to remove make up and pollutants which may irritate skin, and apply moisturiser to treat your skin whilst you sleep. Use body butters at least once a week to lock in moisture, and always be sure to treat all areas of your body with the same treatment as you would your face, including those which are just as exposed i.e. neck and chest.

Eat healthy

The best protection for your skin and hair during the winter is to eat a balanced diet, and stay hydrated. Eating a healthy diet full of nutrients and vitamins is the best way to keep your skin looking and feeling great, whatever the season. Be sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to keep skin and hair hydrated from within. Eating an unbalanced diet will leave your body lacking in the nutrition it needs to stay healthy and glowing.

Keep warm at home

If the temperature inside is much warmer than it is outside, your skin may become easily irritated, causing broken capillaries from the temperature shock. When at home, wear slippers or warm socks to prevent feet getting cold. When bathing or showering, be sure to avoid using extremely hot water as this will strip the natural moisture from skin and hair, resulting in dry and irritated skin cells.
