Winter is a beautiful month; snow covering the hillside, dark nights where you can see the stunning night sky, and it gives you a great excuse to stay nice and cosy in your warm house. However, if there’s one frustrating thing about winter, it’s the fact that it can cause your skin to become itchy, dry, and inflamed.
At the Aesthetic Skin Clinic, we understand this annoyance, which is why we have suggested some fantastic tips in which you can treat or even avoid entirely the stresses of itchy, dry and red skin.
Use Plenty of Moisturiser
If you like to moisturise your skin during the spring and summer months, you will notice already that they work an absolute treat. However, when it comes to the harsher months of autumn and winter, your moisturising routine needs to change.
Try and use oil-based moisturisers, as they can provide an extra layer of protection for the skin. This enables the skin to retain more moisture during the winter months and prevents the skin from becoming dry. Products such as the Obagi Hydrate can hydrate your skin, helping to prevent it becoming dry during winter.
Avoid Taking Long, Hot Baths
One of the things that you always want during winter is a lovely hot bath to relax in after a long day working in the cold or even just a day out in the cold. But, to keep your skin in the best condition possible, you need to take these out of your routine.
Hot baths can break down the lipid barriers within the skin, meaning that moisture can be lost through the skin; one of the main reasons of persistent dry skin. If you want to stay warm but also retain moisture within the skin, warm baths are generally better and make sure to not stay in the bath for too long.
If you wanted to go for a natural remedy whilst in the bath and maintaining moisture, then why not add some natural oils to the bath or even oatmeal. It may seem a bit unusual, but by adding water to oatmeal, you create oat milk. Oatmilk has been used for maintaining moisture in the skin for centuries.
Eat Foods Packed of Healthy Oils
People tend to think that food full of oils are bad for you, believing that they can clog up pores within the skin. However, if you manage a diet that is packed with healthy oils, then this is actually great for you, as the healthy oils will be able to maintain moisture within the skin.
Keeping this in mind, here are some foods that are packed with healthy oils that would benefit your skin massively:
· Avocados – avocado oil is great for the skin, as it can treat itchy skin and reduce redness
· Olives – everyone knows how good olive oil is for the skin, especially when it comes to retaining moisture
· Eggs – eggs contain lots of protein and nutrients that help to promote skin regeneration and retain skin elasticity
