How Menopause Affects your Skin in Ways you Wouldn’t Think of

by .

There’s something special in embracing the idea of ageing gracefully. And whilst menopause is a very natural part of this process which should be embraced, your hormones during the menopausal stage can play a big role in how your skin looks as you age. Specifically, what’s commonly referred to as menopausal skin, can make your skin prone to sagging, thinning, and even wrinkling due to your body’s lowered oestrogen levels during this phase of your life.

What is menopausal skin and how does it happen?

Aside from the lowered oestrogen levels which are a main contributor to wrinkles, your body also reduces its production of collagen which makes your skin elastic and more youthful looking. You also tend to lose fat under your skin which can make it appear looser and saggier. Due to the hormonal changes that also happen in your body, you may also start to see prominent lines forming around your neck, jawline, cheeks, and even under your eyes. Crow’s feet may also start to form and you could be seeing fine lines above your upper lip as well.

How to combat menopause skin problems?

Even though you cannot fully avoid menopausal skin, there are a number of ways that can help you reduce the signs of ageing and restore your skin’s natural glow despite your age.

Choose the right products for your skin type: as you reach menopausal, your skin gets drier. Even if in your younger years your skin was on the oilier side, things can suddenly change once your hormones rise and fall. Re-evaluate your current skincare and check if these products still work well for your current skin type.

Hydrate your skin more: now that your skin is losing hydration faster than before, you need that extra boost of moisture. For example, use cleansers that are creamy in formula instead of foam and gel cleansers that can strip away moisture. At night, instead of using a lightweight moisturiser, try heavier creams that will work to deeply hydrate your skin as you sleep for a more vibrant glow the next day. Boosting the hydration levels of your skin can also minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Target those age spots: as you age, you will begin to notice the appearance of age spots on your face, hands, and even your chest. These age spots can become even more obvious and prominent during your menopausal period too. The good thing is, there are a range of skincare products designed to exfoliate and help shed those dead skin cells. Exfoliating can help lighten, even out, and even prevent dull and flaky skin. Here is another problem that most people tend to ask whenever they reach the menopausal stage: “Adult acne, is it a sign of menopause?” The answer is a resounding yes. Because of your hormonal fluctuations, your skin can be more prone to breakouts, so it’s best that you target your acne issues before they result in acne scars and spots.

Make sure you get that beauty sleep: your body heals and recharges as you sleep. This process also applies to your skin. Lack of sleep can also affect your hormonal levels, thus creating more skin issues without you actually noticing it.

Get that daily SPF: when you’re in your menopausal stage, your skin can be more prone to sun damage. Your body produces less protective melanin and collagen and it makes your skin thinner and unable to fully protect itself from sun damage. If you’ve been skipping your sunscreen during your pre-menopausal stage, now’s the time to make sure that you lather yourself up with that daily dose of SPF before heading outdoors.

Getting menopausal skin is normal and people who reach menopause will definitely experience the ups and downs of this stage of life. However, with the right products and a decent level of tender love and care shown towards your skin, it’s totally possible to maintain a youthful complexion even well into your 50s!
