2021 Skincare Trends You Need To Know

With the majority of us spending most of 2020 in the comforts of our own home, skincare has boomed in popularity and skyrocketed to the top of our social media trending pages. That is definitely one silver lining we can’t argue with! Now more than ever, skincare is becoming part of our regular routine and we are starting to look after our complexions younger than ever. With makeup left on our beauty counters over the lockdowns, attention has instead turned to the health of our skin. Woo!

But as we approach the end of 2020 we are looking forward to 2021 and with the spotlight on skincare, we can’t wait to see the skincare trends 2021 brings. Here are a few of our predictions...

self care

Self Care

Skincare is no longer just about slapping on some moisturiser before you run out the door. With the introduction of new, lengthy and calming skincare routines, skincare has now become more about taking the time to slow down and enjoy the relaxing process. As we step into 2021, our prediction is the skincare industry  will only become more and more entwined with our moods and mental health. No longer is skincare all about just looking good on the outside, but feeling good on the inside too.

Algae

Yes you read that correctly. Our feelers have detected there will be a rise in popularity of this naturally occurring ingredient in 2021. Found sitting on top of the sea, algae is one of the most exposed living things on the planet, constantly on display and in direct sight of harmful UV rays. So where does this fit into skincare? Well, with algae always being exposed to the elements it has developed the incredible ability to protect itself, and with the right formulation, it can protect your skint too! With the sustainability of this up-and-coming ingredient, it is hoped that this will also draw attention to the lifecycle of our skincare ingredients and packaging, and how this impacts our beautiful oceans. Hello blue planet beauty.

Beauty Technology

beauty technology

Technology has recently been creeping more and more into the beauty sphere, and we couldn’t be more happy about it! 20 years ago could you ever have imagined that skin analysis apps would exist?! Now we can try on makeup virtually, interact with a voice-controlled smart mirror and experience LED facials from the comfort of our dressing gown and slippers. The leaps and bounds we are making with technology have already disrupted the beauty and skincare industry, and it doesn’t look like this will be slowing down in 2021. I don’t know about you, but I am on the edge of my seat anxiously anticipating what will be next.

If you would like to delve into this topic a little further then you can read our blog post “Is Technology the Future of the Beauty Industry” where we touch on one of our favourite skincare/technology hybrid products, the Dr Dennis Gross Specralite Faceware Pro.

Clean Skincare

Everyone might sound like a bit of a broken record at this point, but the pandemic really has impacted all corners of life, and the beauty industry is no exception. Our priorities have shifted and our view on the products we use has altered dramatically. Stepping into 2021, our skincare product choices will be heavily influenced by the impact they have on our precious planet. This encompasses packaging, sustainability of ingredients and the overall ethics of the companies we choose to purchase from. In 2021 I can’t wait to see companies shift to align with these priorities to more earth-friendly practices.

Science-Backed Skincare

Having said that, clean beauty and science-backed skincare are not mutually exclusive. The public’s view on who they can trust has shifted and the spotlight is now on dermatologists and scientists to pave the way for our skincare. Whilst we are all seeking ‘clean’ and natural beauty products, 2021 will all be about finding those that combine earth-friendly practices with clinically proven ingredients backed up by science.
