What Is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation can occur for many reasons and appear on anyone’s skin. No skin type is off-limits. To put it simply, it is a skin condition where areas of your skin are darker than the rest. It can appear anywhere on the body, on the face, arms, or legs, and take many different shapes, ranging from small to larger patches.
It occurs due to the overproduction of melanin, this is the pigment that gives your skin its colour and several causes can induce this.
The main cause is from too much exposure to the sun’s UV rays, which if you spend enough time outside without protection, can alter the structure of your skin. This could be from excessive sunbathing and tanning to working outside in the elements.
There are different types of hyperpigmentation, but the most common ones associated with summer are:
Sunspots
These are caused by excessive sun exposure and are commonly found on areas of the body which are typically more exposed to direct sunlight such as the face and arms.
Hyperpigmentation Due To Inflammation
This kind of hyperpigmentation is a result of damaged skin caused by acne, cuts or burns.
Prolonged sun exposure is generally the main cause for most people with hyperpigmentation.
