Your New Pre-Sun Skincare Routine

Sun, is that you? We’ve been patiently waiting! There are so many reasons to love the sun - it provides us with vitamin D, which is good for mental health and skin. It gives us that much needed boost of serotonin, shaking us from our winter blues, and it can also give us that healthy glowing complexion we are after. But whilst you should still be making the most of the lovely weather, you should also be protecting your skin.

Step 1: Cleanse Your Skin

Cleansing your skin should always be the first step in your skincare routine - especially if you are going to be going out in the sun! Cleansing plays an extremely vital role in our beauty regimen as it keeps the skin refreshed and washes away all those nasty aggressors that we come into contact with on a daily basis.

So, step one - pick your cleanser and get washing! The Obagi Clenziderm Daily Care Foaming Cleanser is one of our favourites and is the perfect addition to your pre-sun skincare routine for removing impurities or toxins that have built up on the surface of your skin. With 2% salicylic acid, this cleanser will remove dirt and excess oil, leaving your skin clean, refreshed, and ready for our next step.

Step 2: Vitamin C If You Please

Did you know that vitamin C and sun cream are the power couple of protection? Combining the two will actually protect you against those nasty UVA rays. Vitamin C works to neutralise free radical damage from sun exposure, and when paired with your daily (and yes, we mean daily) sunscreen use, it can really help you fight off that potential sun damage.

Now we couldn't talk about vitamin c without mentioning The Good C, from Dr. Barbara Sturm.  Dr. Barbara Sturm’s The Good C Vitamin C serum contains 5% Vitamin C in a stabilised form that is quickly absorbed, safe and gentle on the skin. With potent antioxidant properties, this serum will work to protect you against free radicals and environmental factors. Not to mention, this formula contains aloe vera and hyaluronic acid which additionally provide intensive moisture and hydration - what more could you want?

Step 3: Apply Your Favourite Broad-Sun Protection

As the summer rolls around it’s important to up your sun protection game. Under the harsh summer sun, our skincare experts would recommend SPF 50, as it offers an impressive 98% protection.

The SkinCeuticals Oil Shield UV Defense Sunscreen SPF50 is lightweight and offers a dry-touch formula that is residue-free. It contains broad-spectrum UV protection with mattifying properties to keep excess oil under control. Apply liberally over the face and neck, using any remaining product on the back of your hands.

After Sun Care Is Also Important!

As well as prepping your skin before heading out in the sun, remember that looking after yourself post-sunshine is also important. Sun damage can be long-term and difficult to reverse, so it’s vital that you take every step before and after to prevent this from happening.

Our Skincare Experts' top advice would be to stay on top of your sunscreen - reapplying every 2 hours between 10 am and 6 pm. This will ensure that your level of protection is upheld and that you are minimizing the risk to your skin’s health.

Another top tip would be to moisturise regularly. No matter your skin type, the sun can really drain your skin and prevent it from retaining as much moisture as it should. Hydrating yourself often will halt sun damage and surface-level wrinkles in their tracks.
