Why is Winter bad for your skin?
There's a reason why beauty brands rave about that 'summer glow' and not a winter equivalent! Winter spells trouble for our skin for a miriad of reasons. The changing temperatures as we leave our heated homes for the cold outdoors can have detrimental effects on our skin barrier function, with dry skin, acne flare-ups and more visible fine-lines common occurances. Our bodies also work extra hard to keep our important organs warm and healthy when we're out in the cold, meaning less circulation goes to our skin causing even more dullness and dehydration. Couple this with changing lifestyle factors such as a change in diet, increase in alcohol, less exercise and more screentime, and our skin begins to suffer!
What are the best Winter skincare ingredients?
The colder months call for some extra skin TLC. Focus on repairing and protecting your skin barrier with gentle skincare and hydrators, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, peptides and ceramides. Its also important to exfoliate regularly during Winter to keep your skin cells rejuvenated, preventing dry, dull skin, as well as fine lines and breakouts. Vitamin A's (e.g Retinol), AHAs and BHAs are all great additions to your winter skincare routine. They work by increasing collagen production, cell turnover, and hydration, so you can keep your skin looking and feeling healthy and hydrated all Winter long.
Do I need to use SPF in Winter?
Yes! Although the sun's rays are more obvious in the Summer, the harmful radiation they omit penetrates through clouds. So, even when we can't see the sun, we need to protect our skin from it!
Can I use retinol in Winter?
Yes. Retinol is a great exfoliating ingredient which will keep your skin smooth, bright and healthy throughout the Winter. Do, however, be mindful of inflammation and cut back usage if sensitivity occurs. It's always best to start with a low potency retinol applied 1-2 times a week, increasing usage as your skin adjusts to it. This will help to avoid the sensitivity which some people experience.
How do I hydrate Winter skin?
Exfoliating is key to keeping skin hydrated as it enables the skin to absorb the moisturising products properly. Moisturising morning and night should keep the skin adequately hydrated. However, if you experience very dry skin, a thicker moisturser and a hyaluronic acid serum will give the skin the extra moisture surge it needs. We often forget to drink enough water in the colder months but its imporant to stay hydrated so our skin stays plump and moisturised from the inside out.
