5 DIY De-Puffing Tips And Tricks For Brighter Eyes

For the past year or so, face coverings have been a staple in our wardrobes, making our eyes our newest statement piece! Now in the UK face masks are no longer mandatory, however many will still choose to wear them, leaving most of features deeply hidden in the confines of a facial mask, our eyes are the focal point of our face.

With lockdown behind us and the world reopening, there is no harm in spoiling our peepers to give us that twinkle back this Summer. So to help you dazzle family and friends with the sparkle in your eyes, we've compiled our top 5 de-puffing tips and tricks to give you brighter eyes this Summer.

What Causes Puffy Eyes?

Combatting puffy eyes and dark circles is a battle that many of us face every morning when we wake up. So what causes this pesky problem in the first place?

Swelling around the eyes is typically caused by stressors including aging, crying, stress, fatigue, dehydration, allergies, sinus problems or over consumption of salt. With the eye area being so delicate, the thin layer of skin that covers our eyes is easily aggravated and can be more prominent than other areas of our face or body when suffering from fluid retention and swelling. So how can we help reduce the appearance of puffy eyes?

Cold Spoons

Cold spoons, cucumber slices, chilled eye mask, splashing your face with cold water, applying a cold compress, the choice is yours! The trick with this DIY de-puffing eye hack is reducing the blood flow to the eye area and therefore lessening inflammation and swelling in that area. Before you start your morning skincare routine, apply your cold compress of choice for a few minutes to your under eyes. My personal favourite is spoons that have been left in the fridge overnight. The spoons hold the cold temperature, and I love to rock the chilled spoon back and forth to aid fluid drainage. Did I mention it also feels oh-so refreshing?

Green Tea Bags

Caffeine perks us up in the morning, helping us to feel awake, it has the same effect on our eyes, helping them to look more awakened and refreshed. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, so similarly to a cold compress, it constricts blood vessels and therefore helps reduce swelling or inflammation. By directly applying caffeine to the puffy under eye area in the form of tea bags, it will be like giving your eyes an espresso Starbucks shot, making them appear smoother, brighter and more awake.

Top tip: For an added dose of de-puffing power, use chilled tea bags

Eye Creams

Whilst eye creams aren't strictly DIY, surely applying the cream counts as ‘doing it yourself’? In any case, I have snuck in one tip that will help you de-puff your eyes without having to raid your kitchen, and that is eye creams. Eye creams harness the power of natural ingredients in a carefully considered formula to give you the best nature has to offer, with a sprinkling of medical grade ingredients to pack a powerful punch in the fight against puffy eyes. Whether you need an eye gel for oily skin, retinol packed eye serum, a hydrating eye mask or an LED eye treatment, we've just about got it all. If you are looking for a bit of TLC for your newest statement, you can browse our range of eye creams, eye serums and eye masks here. What a sight for sore eyes!
