Glycolic Acid FAQs

#What does glycolic acid do for skin?

Glycolic acid works by breaking down the bonds that hold dead skin cells to the skin's surface (chemical exfoliation). This process reveals a brighter, more radiant complexion, boosts cell turnover, and, with regular use, helps stimulate collagen production for firmer skin.

#What is glycolic acid used for in a skincare routine?

Glycolic acid is primarily used for its exfoliating and anti-ageing properties. It helps reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin texture, minimises the appearance of pores, brightens hyperpigmentation, and promotes a plumper, more lifted appearance.

#How to use glycolic acid safely in a routine?

To safely use glycolic acid, start with a lower concentration (glycolic acid serum or toner) 1 to 2 times a week in the evening. Gradually increase frequency as your skin tolerates it. Always follow up with a broad-spectrum SPF the following morning, as AHAs can increase sun sensitivity.

#Can you use glycolic acid on sensitive skin?

Yes, glycolic acid can be used on sensitive skin, but it requires caution. Start with a low concentration (5% or less) and apply it only once or twice a week. Monitor your skin closely for signs of irritation, redness, or peeling, and reduce usage if side effects persist.

Glycolic Acid Benefits: The Ultimate Exfoliating Treatment

Glycolic acid is the most widely recognised Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), celebrated for its small molecular size, which allows it to penetrate the skin efficiently. This acid works by dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells and the skin's surface, a process known as chemical exfoliation. This action reveals the fresh, new skin underneath, which is essential for combating dullness, improving skin texture, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Regular incorporation of a glycolic acid serum or peel into your routine encourages collagen production, leading to a firmer, plumper, and more youthful complexion with enhanced elasticity.

What is Glycolic Acid Used For in Advanced Formulations?

The versatility of glycolic acid means it is effectively used in various product forms to target specific areas and concerns. A glycolic acid toner or serum is ideal for daily or near-daily use on the face to maintain clarity and radiance, preparing the skin for subsequent treatments. For targeted renewal and intense smoothing, a glycolic acid cream or peel can be used to treat signs of sun damage and improve overall tone. The exfoliating power of glycolic acid body wash formulations helps to smooth rough skin texture and improve the appearance of uneven pigmentation across the body, ensuring a uniform glow from head to toe.
