To repair a damaged skin barrier, simplify your routine to focus on hydration and protection. Temporarily stop using all actives like retinoids and exfoliants. Use a gentle cleanser, a hydrating serum, and a rich, occlusive moisturiser to lock in moisture and support the skin's natural healing process.

Retinol does not "destroy" the skin barrier, but its potent exfoliating effects can temporarily compromise it if used improperly. This is a common cause of irritation and dryness. To prevent this, introduce retinol slowly into your routine, use a lower concentration, and always pair it with barrier-supporting products.

Signs of a damaged skin barrier can include persistent dryness, redness, flakiness, or a feeling of tightness. Your skin may also become more sensitive and reactive to products that it once tolerated. You might also notice a dull or uneven texture and an increased frequency of breakouts.
