Why Post-Procedure Skincare Matters
Immediately after any resurfacing or wounding treatment, the skin barrier is disrupted. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), the rate at which water evaporates through the skin, increases, sensitivity is elevated and the skin's defence against environmental pathogens is temporarily reduced. This window of vulnerability is also a window of opportunity: the skin's repair processes are active, and the products applied during this period can either support or interfere with the healing response.
The priorities during this window are barrier protection, calming visible inflammation and maintaining adequate moisture. Introducing exfoliating actives, retinoids or high-concentration vitamin C too soon after treatment can increase the risk of prolonged inflammation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and delayed healing. The skin needs support whilst healing / during a recovery period
Post-Microneedling Recovery Protocol
Days 1 to 3
-
Cleanse with a gentle, low-pH cleanser using cool water and light pressure only.
-
Apply EPICUTIS Lipid Recovery Mask as an overnight treatment to help restore phospholipid content and support a reduction in post-treatment inflammation.
-
Use Obagi Rebalance Skin Barrier Recovery Cream to seal in moisture and support the environment in which your skin is able to heal
-
Avoid makeup, active ingredients and anything that creates friction or pressure on the treated area.
-
Do not use retinoids, acids or vitamin C serums.
Days 4 to 7
-
Reintroduce a gentle, mineral-only SPF 50+ during daylight hours.
-
Continue barrier-supportive moisturiser twice daily.
-
Avoid direct sun exposure and exercise-induced sweating.
-
The EPICUTIS Lipid Recovery Mask can be used every other night during this phase.
Week 2 Onwards
-
Reintroduce vitamin C serum cautiously, beginning with a lower concentration if sensitivity remains.
-
Retinoids and exfoliating acids should be reintroduced no earlier than 10 to 14 days post-treatment, and only once the skin surface feels fully recovered.
-
Continue daily SPF 50+ for a minimum of four weeks post-treatment and always follow your Doctor or practitioner's advice.
Post-Chemical Peel Recovery Protocol
Chemical peel recovery timelines vary significantly by peel depth. Superficial peels (AHA-based, 20 to 30%) typically require two to five days of careful aftercare. Medium-depth peels require seven to fourteen days of intensive barrier management and may involve visible peeling or crusting that should not be manually removed. Deep peels are clinic-supervised procedures with extended recovery requirements.
-
Superficial peel: Same protocol as microneedling Days 1 to 7.
-
Medium peel: Restrict to gentle cleansing and Obagi Rebalance Skin Barrier Recovery Cream only until active peeling ceases. No actives. No makeup.
-
All depths: SPF 50+ is non-negotiable from Day 4 onwards and for a minimum of four to six weeks post-treatment.
Post-Laser Recovery Protocol
Ablative laser treatments produce the most significant post-procedure barrier disruption and the longest recovery window. Non-ablative laser and IPL produce less surface disruption but still benefit from the same barrier-first aftercare approach. Redness and heightened sensitivity are common and are typically best managed with barrier-supportive formulations rather than anti-inflammatory topicals, unless directed by a clinical professional.
EPICUTIS Lipid Serum and Obagi Rebalance Skin Barrier Recovery Cream can be used together as a combined recovery approach for laser patients, addressing both the surface barrier and the deeper cellular membrane disruption that ablative procedures create.
Products to Avoid Post-Treatment
| Product Category | Minimum Avoidance Period | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Retinoids | 10 to 14 days minimum | Can increase irritation and risk of PIH on compromised skin |
| AHA and BHA exfoliants | 10 to 14 days minimum | Further disruption to an already compromised barrier |
| High-concentration vitamin C (below pH 3.0) | 5 to 7 days | Low pH can be irritating to open or sensitised skin |
| Fragranced products / essential oils | Throughout recovery | Common irritants on sensitised post-procedure skin |
| Physical scrubs / cleansing devices | Throughout recovery | Mechanical trauma to healing skin |
| Self-tanning products | Throughout recovery | DHA can cause uneven results and irritation on healing skin |
